“It’s different cultures that make the world go ’round at the end of the day.” This is a quote by Samantha Fox. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences related to intercultural communication.
I am currently a student at Utah Valley University studying speech communication. I am president of the National Communication Association for Students. I enjoy music, theater, and sports. I enjoy being involved in activities with my friends and family.
Chapters one and two contained many points that I found applicable to intercultural communication. I will elaborate on a few of them by relating to them with my own personal insights and experiences. In chapter one we learned more about ethnocentrism, which is the belief that an individual’s culture is superior to another’s. I currently work as a customer service representative at a company called Sykes, which takes calls for Capital one. I have the privilege to speak to various individuals that come from extensively diverse cultural backgrounds. There are individuals that I speak to that have accents due to their cultural background and it can be difficult to understand them. Due to my frustration in not being able to understand them there have been times where I’ve thought that they should learn English because it is the superior language. This relates to ethnocentrism because of how I viewed my culture as superior to those customers that I spoke to on the phone that I had a difficult time understanding. I found this to be an interesting experience in how ethnocentrism plays a role in how we view the world around us.
Time is money is a universal quote that relates to my next point from chapter two. Time orientation is a factor that varies in different cultures. The U.S. culture is generally future oriented. Individuals are constantly seeking to improve the future by setting goals and planning ahead. New Year goals are a common aspect of the U.S. culture which explains how individuals seek to make tomorrow better. European and Asian cultures place emphasis on the past for time orientation. For example, an individual in this society if seeking to make amends with another individual will take into account the previous actions of the individual.
In summary, ethnocentrism and time orientation are valuable aspects of intercultural communication that impact various cultures. I hope that this blog was informative of these points and that I was able to demonstrate my knowledge effectively.
